Geek Corner

Slide Scanning

The Process

The first step is to clean the slides with compressed air. This gently removes dust and other debris without damaging the slide. For this process, we use a special air compressor with a pressure regulator.

We use only use the professional grade Nikon SuperCoolSCAN 5000 ED and 9000 ED slide scanners to scan your slides. These are dedicated slide scanning units that produce amazing results when used correctly. There are some companies out there that will scan your slides using a flat bed scanner. It's impossible to attain the clarity and depth than slides that have been scanned on a dedicated scanner such as the Nikon SuperCoolScan series.

Slides are previewed from within the slide scanning software program where the cropping and other adjustments are made. All slides are labeled numerically by box marking (ie: Vacation_001.jpg). Folders are also named according to the original organizational structure of the slides, unless otherwiese specified by the customer.

After all the slide scanning has been completed, we manually inspect every single image and make sure that it has been oriented properly (people are standing upright) and not flipped or mirrored. Once the image scanning technician has inspected each individual image, a second technician will inspect every image a second time, to ensure that every last image is to your exact specifications.

Finally, the entire order, regardless of the total size, is backed up onto our internal company photo scanning servers. This is referred to as our Lifetime Data Backup plan. At any point a customer can call in and ask for individual images or their whole family history on photo to be burned onto a brand new DVD.

Deteriorating slides

Almost every 35mm slide we encounter has deteriorated in some form. Let’s face it, slides are generally pretty old, and were not made to last forever. There are many defects and potentially problems that typically can arise throughout the aging process. The most common problem found with older slides is color fading. Fading usually manifests as colors losing their vibrancy and the image fading into a red or yellow hue. If you are interested in seeing how we can restore your old slides please ask your image scanning technician for information or examples.

Manual Color Correction Service vs. Image Restoration Service

Manual color correction is described in the Pricing and Basic Info section and mainly is used to fix problems with color in your images. For example if the slide has a red or yellow cast to it, in many cases we can neutralize that color and bring back the original colors. No software program can do this because we are evaluating the image based on the important data and disregarding things like backlighting. If your images has a color cast to them or are too dark, just ask our image scanning technician to employ the manual color correction service. We can even enhance one or two images so that you can see how beautiful your slides can be.
